Dr Christel Fourie

I have worked as a senior psychologist, consultant and coach in assessing and developing talent for global brands such as HP, Swiss Re and BHP Billiton, at for-purpose organisations internationally and leading South African clients such as Nedbank and FNB.  My career started in South Africa more than 20 years ago, I lived in Japan for almost six years and now live in the United Kingdom.

I have coached C-suite clients, mid- to senior leaders and professionals.  The coaching agendas have included helping individuals to optimise performance in a current role, stretching to fulfil requirements of a new role, working with cultural adjustment, dealing with imposter syndrome, navigating career crossroads, supporting returners after a career break and ‘holding up the mirror’ to individuals at risk of derailing.

Coaching often starts with the simple question: ‘What’s possible now?’

It is a practical and orienteering question that considers all the current realities facing the individual and also informs the roadmap for what can be achieved. I adapt the way the coaching works to the individual. The most important factor is to be attentive and work with whatever a person brings with them into a session. Where appropriate, I incorporate assessments to raise self-awareness or fast track the coaching conversation.

My interest in coaching flowed from extensive work in leadership development and 360° feedback. Clients were keen to go beyond personal development plans and it was clear that they were looking for support that would bring about behavioural change. I completed coach training with a strong practical component in 2005 and my D.Phil degree, which I obtained in 2016, focused on how effective leadership shapes organisational culture.
